This page is coordinate improvement of Binary File handling in Tiki. Related: File Upload
If you have a binary file, you can click to download and view or download and save. But what about a preview within the browser? Sometimes, you don't want or can't install software on your current PC.
The following ideas would probably not apply to shared hosting as you need more control on your server.
Big things to do
-
Change content file indexing to use http://framework.zend.com/manual/1.11/en/learning.lucene.indexing.html so that .xlsx, .docx and pptx can be indexed on shared hosting (see LP or Marc for questions)Done for Tiki10: http://tikiwiki.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tikiwiki?view=revision&revision=43228 - Make it possible to convert files to Tiki (ex.: spreadsheet, etc.)
Actions
Index
It is already possible to index binary files for inclusion in search engine in Search Admin
View
Our friends at IMP offer a feature to view various file formats without having the viewer installed on your desktop, with wvHtml, xlhtml, and ppthtml.
Thumbnail
A thumbnailing feature for file galleries is being worked on (early 2009) which uses plugins. A plugin could examine information about a file for creating a thumbnail, and include links for other actions (play video, show full-sized image) as part of the thumbnail display.
Import
How could we use to convert from Word or Open Office to Wiki format?
