Sometimes, a same site has several domain names. And they all end up with different Canonical URLs.
"Examples of non-malicious duplicate content could include:
Discussion forums that can generate both regular and stripped-down pages targeted at mobile devices
Store items shown or linked via multiple distinct URLs
Printer-only versions of web pages"

There is now a new "Canonical URL domain" preference, where admins can choose their domain globally or per perspective.
It's up to the admins to decide if http or https is the canonical. Same with http://example.com vs http://www.example.com- Importance
