Messages Missing from "Sent Messages"

All inter-user message that I created via "My Account" -> "Messages" --> "Compose" are stored in my "Sent Messages".
However, if I pick a user's name from the list of Online Users or from the list of contributor to a wiki page, and from the "User Information" screen pick the "Send Me A Message" tab, any message sent from that screen is NOT stored in my "Sent Messages".
This is difference in behaviour seems unnecessary, particularly for our novice users.
Is this behaviour controlled by a configuration option we've incorrectly set, or is a bug the cause of this UX issue?
